Helios Eyewear – An eco-responsible brand
Ever since its beginning in 2010, the brand knew that marketing and manufacturing products must be done so in a safe and fun working place. All while respecting the environment and having ethical working methods. Keeping this consistent for the following years was not only important, but a must, and this laid the foundation on which our brand DNA was built on.
Our continuous ultimate goal is to completely integrate Helios in a circular economy and as respectful as possible of our environment. This means that each steps of the way need to have the less impact possible on our dear planet: from the raw material, to the production process and finally, the product end-life.
This consistency and focus on our goal helped us improve in ways we dared not dream or hope a few years back. The first concern was to reduce our petroleum use in the product itself. In other words, reduce the “plastic” in the plastic. Thus, the Green Grilamid was born, a material having great technical features and being made from 58% organic material. 58% is not 100%, but we are getting there.
The packaging has also been changed from plastic and paper to recycled paper and biodegradable materials, without compromising its quality and look. We have also gotten the label Made in Moris, certifying that we are a local brand made in Mauritius; these were only small steps growing into the wave we are now embracing.
And now with the launch of our green collection, we are looking into more sustainable material alternatives such as coconut and wood fibers. We also re-use discarded material from our production, and the very plastic from frames our customers give us back.
We do not believe in greenwashing but we fully commit to real change. Not only do these changes and improvements help reduce our carbon and plastic footprint, but it puts us in the right state of mind. This is the new normal, and this is what our customer expects of us and of Helios as a brand.
With the climate change and plastic pollution crises we are seeing our planet being inflicted with, it was more than high time to go up many levels. Not only be eco-responsible but also help the economy, ecology and awaken minds on the matter. We know that we are a small brand within a small community on a small island, but we have BIG intentions.
By joining forces and participating in many environmentally concerned events we were able to not only be part of the change but also we now know even more on the situation our planet is going through. Man oh man were we far from realizing how bad it has already become! We took part in the local Ensam Nu Kapav movement for their beach clean-up, international I Speak Blue Too movement to raise awareness about our impact on the oceans, the Fashion Revolution Week movement on a global scale to show the importance of being ethical and providing a clean and safe environment for everyone, Protez Later Nou Zanfan with their clean-up in the region of Albion on the World Clean-up Day and Fridays for Future Mauritius for the climate change strike that was held all around the world to make society and the governmental authorities understand the need for environmental change that our island also needs to change and become more sustainable.
