Mass consumption is as detrimental to the environment even though it has already become a norm within our society. We know we sell eyewear, but bear with us… With the campaign already launched, the summer collection on its’ way and the holiday season approaching, we felt that we had to deal with this excessive and unnecessary consumption habits encouraged disproportionally with events like the Black Friday.
With an eco-consciousness, the Friendly Thursday movement rose. We setup the movement as an annual event that would be recurring each year. For 2019, the Friendly Thursday is held on the 28th November, hence one day before Black Friday. On this day we team up with other environmentally and socially responsible brands or groups like Le Rendezvous, My Pop Up Store, D&L and Fashion Revolution to encourage YOU, dear friends, to not be influenced by discounts and over consume when initially you might not. Together we spread the message to local manufacturers and producers like Euphory Garments, Save a Sail, Kotpiale, The Kreol Republic, Let it Bee and many other ‘rad’ brands who positively accepted to join us, continue passing on the message and encourage local consumption of goods and services.
You should know that mass consumption leads to mass production which results in highly negative industrial impacts like disgusting industrial waste (Yuck!), industrial rejects, an increase in carbon footprints for shipping goods from one country to another and the extraction of even more natural resources from a limited supply in nature, but wait up, these goods will also have a negative impact when being disposed of. Just this one day will result in the increase of all this damage and this does not help in any beneficial way to the environment or your economy. So, for the Friendly Thursday, we encourage people to open their eyes on the matter and yes, we cannot stop you from buying products but you can join the movement and be the change by at least buying sustainable products that are friendlier to the environment and are produced locally and sustainably and so at least you are not part of the increase in carbon footprints or industrial damage.
We, Helios Eyewear will never stop to consider the planet, yep we will NEVER stop; we have only one planet and should be taking care of it. It is not a coincidence that our shops are decorated with eco-friendly materials, have environmental messages, promote that we are an eco-responsible brand or even sensitize on environmental issues, it is because we do not want to negatively be an impact to nature. We want to spread the word and be the change we want to see in others. Every small action counts, every positive change, no matter how small it is, has become crucial for the planet. Yep, our Earth is suffocating and we want to glide and rise on the seas of change and not sink and drown with the plague of pollution, mass consumption, extortion leading to exhaustion of natural resources, deforestation for more unnecessary ugly bricks of buildings and constructions, increase of carbon footprints and so many more. So stay tuned to see what else we have for you and the environment and we hope to have your support and your participation in saving our planet.
Ok, so yes, we do have a lot of fun and we are pretty much a young and wild team but when it comes to the environment and our planet, we take things very seriously.
It was time to launch the new summer campaign and being a lot wiser and aware than our initial years (and probably crazier than before too) we knew exactly where we were headed. The campaign was going to ride the boat called sustainability and this led us to wanting to expand the impact we could have to a larger audience and so ‘See Friendly. Sea Happy.’ was born from the depths of the oceans. All the waste that ends up on our lands directly impacts our oceans through weather cycles and movements… glub glub glub. Being an island, we thrive on the water bodies that surround us so taking care of the land is important but it also means that at this level of harm done to our planet, our oceans are equally as important.
With the new campaign and the urge to do more, the team worked (long hours of work…) on a strategy revolving around environmental concerns. This is why our Facebook posts do not only reflect the sun loving islanders that we are but also serve as an informative platform with posts on how to be more eco-friendly and eco responsible every day but also show our followers with videos and posts that climate change IS impacting our planet and though we do not come face to face with this on our island, we cannot turn our heads the other way but be aware that what we also influence the climate and the planet every day unknowingly.
Part of the benefits were already going to reducing plastic so now was the time to have another part of the benefits directed to sustaining the oceans that help, not only to keep us cool while we go for a dip, but to regenerate air so important for life. We partnered up with Reef Conservation, an NGO that researches on the water bodies of the island, educates people on the importance of our oceans, reefs and fauna and acts towards a more sustainable Mauritius with clean-ups and so on. Pretty cool, huh? With all the information gathered, the team launched its’ new summer collection and had one ocean colored pair of polarized and 100% UV protected sunglasses per model as a limited edition with which its’ benefits would sponsor the NGO for its’ actions and research. Each limited edition is named after a beach we all run to for the summer in Mauritius and at the Helios shops you can gain knowledge about those beaches in terms of the environment.
Education is the key to change, so the more we reach people, the more we can make people realize the extent of how we have led to destroying our planet but hey, it’s not too late, now we have to make a change and be the superheroes that save our planet together.
At the end of 2018 and beginning of 2019, we started providing frames made out handmade bamboo, injected wooden fibres and injected coconut fibres; this was just the beginning of the Green collection… From there came the initiative of ‘Plant a Tree and Care for Humanity’.
This initiative was a response to our natural frames, stylish and trendy looking frames made of natural materials are definitely more eco-friendly at the end of their lifespan, but hey, we also knew that on the other hand we were extracting more elements from nature to do so. This was a huge blue and green dilemma for us since we do not want to be part of this destruction, deforestation and increase of air pollution (plants clean the air guys!). The project was to then plant a ‘tree’ and help in bringing back some fresh air to the ecosystem. We decided to give back to nature twice a year, but we are not alone, we do so with the children of our community, the more the merrier right?
Planting a ‘tree’ is definitely important, but we took things one step further. If we planted a ‘tree’ just for someone else to uproot it after some time, for whatever unsustainable reason, then all of our efforts would have gone to waste. We know one thing though, children are the voices of the future, they are future pillars of mankind, but the only type of humans we would hope they become, are the ones that grow with nature and not against it.
We know we aren’t the Greta Thunbergs of Mauritius (giggles) but whatever knowledge we have that is worth passing on, especially if it is for the environment, should be shared! So, by having interactive talks with the children about how important conserving the environment is, what are the good habits to adapt to be able to do so but also how what we believe is waste (yes that old tomato puree can is a good example) can be transformed into something totally new or useful, and we try to show this through our upcycling workshops with them.
We worked with community centres and can now proclaim high and loud that sustainability is not difficulty, the more we are invested, the more we are able to connect with our community, the more we are able to see that change can happen… the more gratifying it is, not to mention that all of it is a lot of fun to do.
You would probably say that this is pretty much minor in terms of impact, we totally agree, but impacting does not only mean what we do, it also means how we educate and sensitize. Every person that you can positively influence will positively influence someone else and being aware of the matter will change our habits and together our impact is a lot greater. We don’t know about you, but we are pretty much exhausted to see all the cutting down of trees and natural areas that made Mark Twain quote about the beauty of our island. We want to preserve, nurture and protect the natural environment that gives us way more to feel and see than those bricked walls and tarmac surfaced roads do, don’t you agree?
